Safety in the Workplace

Safety in the work place

Any shipping and receiving lead person or warehouse inventory controller can attest to the chaotic pace that products come in and must be separated and sent down the line. With companies running on leaner inventories in this economy the need for just in time service has really been pushed to the limit. But remember, “Haste makes waste”. The extra few minutes it takes to do the job right can save you in many areas. Valley Box Co is no stranger to the scenarios mentioned above. You want your workers to avoid the paper cuts, scratches and splinters that come with unloading and stocking your product. Simple things like having and using the right tools, keeping the floor clean, and illuminating the shop area will pay you back in spades. How many times have you opened a corrugated box to have a staple scratch you? Have you ever spent 5 minutes looking for that box cutter you just used before break? Have you ever been upset because the screwdriver you’re using to unscrew the top of that wooden box was used as a pry bar?

It’s O.K. Take a deep breath and relax. None of these things happened, because you had a plan. No cuts, scratches or splinters because the crew have gloves. That box cutter you spent 5 minutes looking for was in a scabbard on your belt, right next to your tape measure. That $ 12.00 screwdriver that now can be used as a toothpick is in fine condition because you used a sawsall to cut the nails on the wood panel. I’m sure glad I didn’t step on one of those nails, but your floor was clean and there was plenty of light. Watching a simple safety video and having your workers follow the plan will save you lost time, injuries, and having to buy new tools in the least. But at its best you have a safer, healthier and more productive environment because you chose safety in the work place.
