Shock and Awe is characterized by a big boom followed by a whimpering exclamation. In the context of packaging; as you stood watching, your shipping clerk just tossed the new prototype ($5328.96) in its prototype package ($2.65) to the UPS driver, who missed catching it. Time stood still as the package seemed to hang in the air for ten minutes, fly past the driver’s hands and land in a gentle slide inside the UPS van. The gentle slide took you from despair to hope and then despair again, as your package lost no momentum. It gave a firm thump as it slammed into the bulkhead at the end of the aisle inside the van.

Shock is the energy of impact. It can travel through packaging to the item packaged, resulting in damage. If designed well, your packaging dissipates the shock so the impact energy when it reaches your prototype, is significantly lessened. A successful package transfers shock energy away from the item packaged.

There are many products designed for shock dissipation. These need to be chosen based on the weight and fragility of the item to be packaged. A very common product used would be foam, used as an enclosure with a cavity for the part. But even this must be thought out correctly. Since foam comes in a wide variety of densities the correct density and volume of foam must be chosen to match the weight and fragility of the object packed. A simple rule of thumb is to choose the amount of foam that will support the load, but not too much more.
