So you’ve read our article “What is RAPIDGate?” and you’re curious about all of the different types of equipment and software that goes into this super secure identity management system. Well, we’d like to tell you that just as you may have suspected, Eid Passport's product has an arsenal of sophisticated equipment that the company says is designed to “ensure operational success.” Here’s what they mean, the Program includes:
- Registration Station
- Handheld Scanners
- Guard Station
The Registration Station
The first step in the process of screening individuals that will have access to secure areas, structures, facilities, businesses and the like. It’s here that the ADA-compliant, multi-language kiosk gathers the registrants’ biographic information, biometric data, and photograph. The station is equipped with a digital camera, fingerprint scanner, and web interface.
Handheld Scanners
The next step on the way to successful identification and entry. Credentialed individuals will receive a barcode ID. Eid Passport's FIPS 201 compliant handheld scanners “read the barcode associated with the RAPIDGate Program credential.” FIPS 201 or “Federal Information Processing Standard Publication 201,” specifies the architecture and technical requirements for a common identification standard for Federal employees and contractors. The scanners read biometric data and the magnetic stripe; they are equipped with a keyboard for quick PIN input, and they don a color display, which makes them easier to read.
The handheld scanners are just a step ahead of the final step in the process—the Guard Station. According to Eid Passport, the scanners connect “wirelessly via a secure FIPS 140-2 connection to the Guard Station Infrastructure.” FIPS 140-2 refers to The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Publication 140-2, (FIPS PUB 140-2), which is a U.S. government computer security standard used to accredit cryptographic modules.
The Guard Station
Consists of FIPS 140-2 compliant encrypting file system (EFS), encrypted enforcement server with a:
- Locked Protective Cabinet
- Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)
- Secure Firewall
RAPIDGate uses (only) Department of Defense Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Process (DIACAP) certified equipment.
