Pound for pound wood is the most energy efficient packaging medium when compared to comparable building materials. On top of the recyclability capability, wood contributes fewer greenhouse gas emissions than its non-renewable counterparts, steel and concrete.
Over a 100-year period, net greenhouse gas emissions associated with wood based houses are 20-50% lower than emissions associated with thermally comparable houses employing steel or concrete based building systems.
Compared to a wood floor, these materials require extra fossil fuel to be produced:
- 2.5 x more for a Concrete slab floor
- 4.9 x more for a Steel joist floor
Wood even stands up to recycled materials. The net carbon emitted by producing a ton of recycled aluminum is 9.4 times more than the amount emitted by producing a ton of wood.
